La 11e Panzerdivision est créée en août 1940 à partir de la 11. Schützen-Brigade. Cette brigade commence la guerre au Danemark puis en France, où elle gagne le surnom de "Brigade Fantôme", car son chef manoeuvrait son unité avec une telle vitesse qu'elle surgissait ou frappait toujours là où l'ennemi l'attendait le moins. La nouvelle division reprend les traditions de la brigade, dont son insigne (un spectre chevauchant un char), et devient donc la "division fantôme".
